Healthier Hot Buttered Rum

On a chilly evening – holiday or not – a mug of hot buttered rum is a nice way to warm up inside and out! Most recipes for this old favorite drink use a batter which is primarily sugar.

This recipe is different and, healthier! It uses a fall staple – apple cider – which gives it a seasonal flavor that sets off the rum beautifully without having to add any sugar at all.  For the kids, just omit the rum and perhaps add a drop or 2 of rum flavoring to their mugs, and they can enjoy it right along with the adults!

Hot Buttered Rum

  • 1 qt. Apple cider
  • 24 whole cloves
  • 4 whole cinnamon sticks plus 4 for garnish, optional
  • 4 Tbsp. freshly squeezed lemon juice
  • 8 oz. dark rum, divided
  • 4 tsp. cold unsalted butter, divided into 1 tsp. patties

In a 3 quart saucepan, combine cider, cloves, 4 cinnamon sticks and lemon juice. Bring to a boil. Pour into 4 mugs; top each with 2 oz. rum then a patty of butter. Serve immediately. Add additional cinnamon stick if desired. Serves 4

To make single serving:

  • 8 oz. Apple cider
  • 6 whole cloves
  • 1 whole cinnamon stick
  • 1 Tbsp. lemon juice
  • 2 oz. dark rum
  • 1 tsp. Unsalted butter
