- 6 medium onions, peeled and sliced thinly
- 2-3 tsp melted butter (or light olive oil)
- 1 can Dr. Pepper
- Butter or Olive oil spray
Spray a large skillet, preheat until very warm and melt 1 tsp butter. Do not let it brown. Over medium, low heat, add sliced onions and sauté slowly. Add additional butter as needed (you may need more than 3 tsp). Stir frequently just until the onions begin to turn golden brown. Don’t let them burn!
Once they are all golden brown, slowly add 1 can of Dr. Pepper, a little at a time, stirring constantly. This will take some time so don’t rush it! As the onions absorb the liquid, add a little more, until the whole can is used. It will thick slightly and the onions will get nicely golden brown. Remove from stove and keep warm.
Grill your brats (and burgers) and spoon the caramelized onions over – and enjoy!
